
During the civil rights movement, we saw people who fought tirelessly for people of color to be included in “The Declaration of Independence,” which says, “We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable Rights, that among these are Life, Liberty and the pursuit of Happiness.” https://www.archives.gov/founding-docs/declaration
As we all know, the creators of this document could not foresee that people of color in this country would hold to the truths of the words penned. Independence meant that Black soldiers fought in the American Revolutionary War, and our forefathers worked in construction sites and paved roads, worked on railroads, worked to grow businesses, worked and planted in fields, paid taxes, and fought for voting rights. The Black contribution to this country cannot be denied. We proved that the minds of black Americans excel and exceed expectations, breaking barriers with amazement.
If we fail to allow our accomplishments to be forgotten and fail to encourage our children to strive for education and entrepreneurship, that will change the trajectory of their lives and this country. We do a disservice to those who have given their lives and to those who are still in the fight. We must let our ability to move forward continue. We can’t let the freedoms we share stagnate us.
Never stop recognizing, sharing, and moving forward because there is still more work.
